Figuring out this unplugged lifestyle

Putah Creek

We’ve been here at Canyon Creek for just over a week and we are beginning to feel settled in. The park is ok but in a great location. Winters is the nearest town and it is about 10 miles east of us on a very curvy road. This little town is actually a real gem. It has several good restaurants. ‘Preserves’ is mainly a bar but has a unique menu with gourmet cheeses and a jalapeno jelly they make themselves. They have about 20 beers on tap, many are crafted beers including several from a local microbrew started by the people who own the Berryesa Gap winery. Chueys is a Mexican restaurant that is excellent and Putah Cafe is a great place for breakfast. There is a steak place called Buckhorns that we will check out eventually. Actually our favorite spot is a little coffee shop called Steady Eddy’s. They have free wifi, great coffee and a great breakfast panini John and I share. That is where this post most likely will be made.  So we like this little town and we are enjoying the people John works with so that will make up for some of the inconveniences.

There is some limited internet at the resort but really only good for checking email everyday, otherwise we do our web browsing at Steady Eddy’s. It has really put a crimp in my blog reading. I try to catch up on a few each time but know that I haven’t forgotten about my blogger buddies but my comments may be sporadic for the duration of our stay here. Also non-existent is a cell signal but we are adjusting to that. I had gotten so attached to my smart phone that this little break may be good for me. It does put a crimp in talking to our kids but they tell us that once the cable internet and wifi get here we should be able to Skype them. That would be great.

Television is another item that I have missed. We did decide to do the Dish, month to month program. We got a dish, John wanted to try the manual one first but we have decided to return it and get the self seeking one that is portable. We actually did get one of the satellites but the wrong one. The one we locked on is the one that has all the shopping channels and little else. Those are the channels I wish didn’t even exist since shopping is just not my thing. John works thru Thursday so Friday we will head back to Camping World to make the exchange.

This bridge goes to Lake Berryesa
I have actually been keeping busy. There are a lot of projects around the rig that need done. This week I rearranged my kitchen shelves. I have been cooking a lot more and needed to rearrange and reorganize for how I cook now. We are trying to steer away from processed foods so I am cooking most meals from scratch now and actually loving it. Once the Dish is set up correctly I will have the Food Network and most of my favorite cooking shows are during the day so I will be able to watch them while John works. We have gotten very spoiled this fall by being in areas with great farmer’s market, and we have a wonderful one about 20 miles from here in Davis. It definitely has increased our vegetable and fruit consumption and given me great produce to work with in this cooking adventure.

My other large project is to wash and wax the 5th wheel. I started today. I am taking it in small sections, both washing and waxing, so that I can do it over a couple weeks. As I do this I am checking all the caulking and have already found areas that need to be redone. That will be John’s job, he doesn’t trust me with that one.

We are just 35 very curvy miles from Napa and that will be our first real outing. We may go this weekend but we will see how John feels. He is helping refinish the wood floor in the Lodge. It has been grueling work but he really likes the guys he works with so he figures this is his workout.

I hope this finds all of you out there well and
Happy Trails...........................

  1. When we're checking out remote boondocking areas, we always bring Annie's phone to check for 3G. No, we can't park here. No internet. We can go a day or two, but then we get itchy. Luckily, we've only encountered a few such areas.

  2. Getting "off the grid" can be quite peaceful. There's not that much that you're going to miss. I used to really enjoy going to a particular provincial park about an hour from our place that, for whatever reason or other, had virtually no cell service. Worked for me!
    Nobody could bug us.
    Have fun.

  3. No internet, tv, or celll service would be more of a challenge for me than I'd be willing to face. :)

  4. Sounds like a nice little spot to just get away from it all for a few days!

  5. Sounds like a nice place to be and once you get the satellite hooked up it will be even nicer. But, sometimes being unconnected is a good thing.

  7. So glad you're settling into your new surroundings and making it work for you. I think you'll like having Dish to watch. I've been trying to cook more at home meals, too. I'll have to take a look at your Pinterest recipes. I wish you were closer, we'd meet for some of those craft beers :)

  8. Glad to hear that this is working out for you. Isn't it amazing how we RVers can adapt to our surroundings? And if it gets too bad, we can always move on (lol). Take care you two! :)

  9. You are much more agreeable to no Internet service than I could ever be - maybe that's a good thing!!!

  10. We love farmer's markets! Fresh veggies and fruit tastes so much better. I have been without internet for 3 or 5 days straight and it was not pretty!

  11. I am with some of the others on the connection comments. It would be hard to spend a lot of time disconnected:( Otherwise it sounds like a pretty good place:)

  12. It seems like we had a connection with out Wilson's Antenna and booster when we were there. How long are the two of you going to be there? I want to get over to see the two of you!

  13. It seems like we were able to get a wifi/phone connection when we were there. We used a Wilsons' Trucker antenna and booster. How log are the two of you staying there? We want to make sure we get out that way to see you both!

  14. It's so nice to read your blog, Janie, and remember our new friends from RV Dreams rally! Your new place looks absolutely beautiful. If I remember correctly, you're going to be there for several months, correct? It will probably surprise you all the things you can get accomplished with your new "found, unplugged" time! Enjoy the moments! Max and Paula

  15. I understand the lack of services, but I miss seeing updates from you guys. We're doing fine at Amazon. It would be so much more fun if you guys were here to share breaks with. I remember all the laughing we did during those breaks! Hope all is going well.
